Trying to Conceive after 35

Many women in their 30's and early 40's are trying to conceive for the first time due to many factors such as careers, economic reasons, difficulty finding the right partner, etc. The majority of them will go on to have healthy pregnancies and healthy babies, however, TTC after 35 has it's risks.

I had several chemical pregnancies most likely due to chromosomal abnormalities. I miscarried once more after Olivia at the age of 40 at 9 weeks showing only a 6 week embryo. However, I delivered a healthy baby girl at 37 years old and at the time of this writing, I am 42 years old and a little more than 6 months pregnant with another little girl. All tests came back normal including a quadruple screening and Nuchal translucency test..

When we are in our mother's womb, we have all the eggs that we will carry for a lifetime unlike men who produce new sperm every 72-90 days. The way we take care of our bodies, environmental exposures, medications, etc. all have an impact on egg quality. Remember, if you are 35 or over, your eggs are too. This may make it difficult to conceive and carry a baby to term.

Women over age 35 have an increased risk of:

  • Fertility problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Multiple pregnancy (twins or more)
  • Miscarriage
  • Placenta previa, a condition in which the placenta is in the wrong place and covers the cervix
  • Cesarean section
  • A baby with a genetic disorder

Because of these increased risks for women over 35, prenatal care is especially important. Eating healthy and taking Folic Acid can prevent many birth defects.

If you are over 35 and have been actively trying to conceive for 6 months or more, it is time to contact a specialist.

Visit the March of Dimes website for more on conceiving after 35.
