BBT
is
your base body temperature before
movement. As soon as you wake in the morning. Without getting up, without
giving hubby a kiss, before running to the bathroom. The only thing you can do
is turn your alarm clock off and grab your
Basal Thermometer which should be on your nightstand where you don't have
to go searching for it.
Step1: choose a scheduled time. This would be
the time you most frequently wake. It is important to be consistent. I
understand that sometimes we oversleep or get up too early to go to the
bathroom. A good rule of thumb
to use is that if you wake up earlier or later than your scheduled time, add
.1 degree for every half hour early you awaken and to subtract
.1 for every half hour you awaken late or wake up early. This is because the basal body
temperature will creep up as the day gets started. This method can only be
used if you are off by 90 minutes.
Example: You normally wake at 7 am but today you
woke up at 6:30 am.
If your BBT was 97.9 degrees, then in your chart write down 98 degrees. If you
woke at 6am then it would be 98.1 degrees. Let's say you woke up at ay 8am then
you would chart 97.7 degrees. If you are using ovusoft,
then just add the temperature you took and let ovusoft
adjust it for you.
Step 2: Mark it down in your chart.
At the beginning of your cycle your basal body
temperature is at the low end.
Right after you ovulate, your temperature will rise about one half degree or
more, and will remain at this higher temp during your Luteal
Phase*.
In some cases your chart may reveal a triphasic
pattern. This is marked by a three levels of temperature. Pre-ovulatory
temperatures, post ovulatory temperatures and a second rise in temperature
around 6-9dpo when implantation* may have occurred.
You are most fertile the two to three days
before the rise in basal temperature, and on the actual day of ovulation.
Since an egg only survives up to 24 hours and typical only 6-12 hours, it is
important to time intercourse 12 hours before ovulation. Sperm usually reach
the fallopian tube and the egg within minutes after intercourse however, sperm
need about 12 hours in your uterus before they can fertilize the egg in a
special process called capacitation.
This is the maturation process within the female reproductive tract by which
spermatozoa become capable of fertilization. That's why the best time to make
love is the day before and the day of ovulation.
You need a minimum of 10 days of post ovulatory
high temps in order for a fertilized egg to have enough time to burrow into
your uterine lining. Average healthy luteal phase*
is 12-14 days. If you do not have a minumum of 10 day LP, then it is
considered a luteal phase defect. You will
not be able to conceive. It is important to contact your physician. There are
ways to lenghten your LP.
How to chart your BBT
To take your basal body
temperature (BBT) you need a special
Basal Thermometer oral thermometer,
which goes only from 94 to 100 degrees, but has 1/10 degree gradations to make
even tiny temperature changes detectable. Take your temperature first thing
in the morning before any activity. That means before you
get out of bed or have any movement. There also needs to be at least
three hours of consecutive sleep. Keep your BBT Thermometer in a
place that is easily accessible from your bed. A place where you only have to
reach your arm out to get it, like your night stand.

Typically, your temperature will start out in
the 97's F. When it suddenly becomes elevated , you are in the Luteal Phase*
which typically lasts 12-14 days. Progesterone is secreted by Corpus Luteum*
which is causing your temperature to rise or stay elevated. If conception has
occurred, hCG hormone is produced and this tells the Corpus Luteum* to continue secreting progesterone.
If your temperature stays elevated for 18 days, you are most likely pregnant.
"I use Ovusoft Fertility Software to track my fertility signs. It is a wonderful tool. This
software, along with the book 'Taking
charge of Your Fertility; The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control and
Pregnancy Achievement' has given me a greater understanding of my fertility
signs." ~ Kirsten from Colorado
*Luteal Phase: The stage of the
menstrual cycle between the formation of a yellow mass of tissue ( corpus
luteum* ) after the release of an ovum and the start of the next period.
*corpus luteum :
a yellow mass of tissue that forms in part of the ovary after ovulation and
secretes the hormone progesterone. If no pregnancy is established, the
corpus luteum degenerates, whereas it continues to secrete the hormone if
pregnancy occurs.
* implantation: when the embryo burrows
into the lining of the uterus.
